Spotlight on: FS Tarvarius Moore: Moore is the most surprising member of The Replacements, the group of players in prominent roles because of injuries to seven season- opening starters. Moore became Sunday’s starter when Jimmie Ward was injured in Thursday’s practice. The 2018 third- round pick will be making his first start since he made the last of three uneven season- opening starts in place of Ward last year. The 49ers allowed three receptions of 50- plus yards last season, and Moore took poor angles on two of them: a 76- yard TD by Pittsburgh’s JuJu Smith- Schuster in Week 3 and a 66yard score by Cincinnati’s John Ross in Week 2.

Injury notes: 49ers — LB Kwon Alexander ( ankle), FS Jimmie Ward ( quadriceps) and SS Jaquiski Tartt ( groin) are out; RB Jeff Wilson ( calf) and S Marcell Harris ( ankle) are questionable. Patriots — S Kyle Dugger ( ankle), WR Julian Edelman ( knee), G Shaquille Mason ( calf) and DE Derek Rivers ( back) are questionable.

THREE THINGS TO WATCH

Patriots QB Cam Newton has a 63.3 passer rating in his past two starts. Newton has completed 34 of 53 passes for 319 yards with a TD and three INTs. QBs have a 14.6 rating when targeting Verrett.
