U. S. women’s soccer star Morgan makes her European debut

With her baby daughter in the stands, U. S. national team standout Alex Morgan made her debut in English soccer. The Cal alum came on as a substitute in the 69th minute for Tottenham in a 11 draw against Reading in the Women’s Super League. It was her first match in about 15 months, having given birth to Charlie in May.

Charlie wore a toddlersiz­ed Tottenham jersey.

“It’s fun to look up after the match and see her there supporting me,” Morgan said. The twotime World Cup winner joined Tottenham in September in a bid to get some game time ahead of playing for the United States at the delayed Tokyo Olympics next year.

“It just feels good to get back on the field for the first time in more than a year,” Morgan, 31, said. “I just had to get those first minutes and go from there.”

Cindric steamrolls way to Xfinity title

Austin Cindric charged on fresh tires to his first NASCAR championsh­ip with a gutsy overtime drive to beat fellow contender Justin Allgaier to win the Xfinity Series finale at Phoenix Raceway.

Cindric was headed toward the win when titlefavor­ite Chase Briscoe spun with six laps remaining. It brought out a caution that forced Cindric and Team Penske into a bold racedecidi­ng strategy call: Handing Allgaier the lead by pitting for new tires, a call that dropped Cindric to third for the twolap overtime shootout.

Baseball: Pitcher Robbie Ray and the Toronto Blue Jays agreed on a oneyear, $ 8 million deal, making him the first of 181 free agents to get a new contract. The Diamondbac­ks traded him to the Blue Jays on Aug. 31, and he pitched in the playoffs for Toronto. The 29yearold lefty was a combined 25 with a 6.62 ERA this year.
