Florida’s Johnson collapses on court

-

Florida forward Keyontae Johnson, the SEC’s preseason player of the year, was listed in critical but stable condition at a Florida hospital after collapsing on the court during the Gators’ 8371 loss to No. 20 Florida State on Saturday.

Johnson had just dunked before he fell to the floor as the team broke its huddle during a timeout. Several teammates were in tears as coach Mike White gathered his team to say a prayer.

Florida ( 31) was ahead 113 after Johnson’s dunk, but the host Seminoles ( 30) scored the next seven points. Florida State pulled away from there and led 4535 at halftime.

White, who canceled postgame interviews to join Johnson at the hospital, let his players choose whether to continue the game after Johnson’s collapse. They voted after Johnson was taken away on a stretcher and again at halftime to keep playing.

“Whatever they thought was in the best interest of their team, then I would accept it,” Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said. “My administration asked me and I told them we would be OK with whatever they decided.
