Bette Wallace Landis passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Sequoias Residence Home in San Francisco on Monday morning, December 7, 2020. Bette was born in San Angelo, Texas, on June 27, 1926 to Hal and Florence Wallace. After completing college at North Texas State in Texas, Bette went first to New York and then to San Francisco. She fell in love with her adopted home and, soon after, met and married Andrew John Negro, loving father of her six children: Carol, Angela, Anthony, David, Jeannette, and Robert. After Andrew’s untimely death, she married Robert Landis, who became a devoted husband to Bette and a beloved stepfather to her children. Along with her role as loving mother and wife, Bette worked for a series of Democratic politician­s, including Dianne Feinstein and Louise Renne, and volunteere­d for countless civic and political activities, campaigns, and causes. She assisted and supported many young politician­s getting their start in public office, many of whom are now governors, senators, and representa­tives. This retinue even includes the current Vice President- Elect. She was on the Open- Space Division of the SF Planning Commission and participat­ed in a wide range of organizati­ons including: Martin Luther King Celebratio­n Day, the San Francisco Boys Chorus, the San Francisco Board of Education, the Ingleside Community Center, and the

Glide Foundation.

A lifelong opera fan, Bette herself was a talented singer and contribute­d her lovely voice as both a soloist and chorus member at the Temple United Methodist Church in San Francisco’s Ingleside District.

Bette will be lovingly remembered by all those whose lives she touched. She is survived by her daughter Carol Negro and Carol’s partner Francesca Bator; her daughter Angela and son- in- law James Beem; her son Anthony Negro; her son Robert Negro and daughter- in- law Donna Sharee; her grandchild­ren: Peter Johnson, Charles Johnson, Melinda Wallace, Lance Palmer, Justin Palmer, Ryan Negro, Nick Negro, Andrew Beem, and Joanna Beem; and six great- grandchild­ren.
