Kim on cusp of No. 1

Sei Young Kim is in position to defend her title in the CME Group Tour Championsh­ip, win player of the year, claim the money title and be No. 1 in the world.

Kim will take a onestroke lead over topranked Jin Young Ko into the final round of the LPGA Tour season Sunday after shooting 5underpar 67 to reach 13under 203 at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Fla. Ko had a 69. The 11yearold son of Tiger Woods held his own in his national TV debut at the PNC Championsh­ip in Orlando, Fla. Charlie Woods confidentl­y twirled his club before shots and even pumped his fist on the par5 third hole with a 3wood into 3 feet for eagle.

They finished at 10under 62, four shots behind Matt Kuchar and son Cameron in the scramble event for major champions and family members.

NBA: On the final day of exhibition games ahead of Tuesday’s regularsea­son openers, Russell Westbrook made his Washington Wizards debut, scoring eight points before sitting out the second half in a 9996 win over the visiting Detroit Pistons. Westbrook played his first game for Washington after coming over from Houston in the John Wall trade.

Soccer: U. S. Soccer picked Samantha Mewis as national female soccer player of the year. Mewis, 28, played in eight of the nine Team USA games with six starts. She scored four goals in Olympic qualifying and six in 17 matches in England, helping Manchester City to the FA Cup. Lionel Messi equaled Pele’s alltime club scoring tally in a 22 draw with visiting Valencia. His 643rd career goal for Barcelona since his 2004 debut matched Pele’s tally for Santos ( 195774).
