Randal Wayne Hooper

Randal Wayne Hooper, 68, passed away on December 3, 2020. He was a devoted son, father, brother, and uncle. He was also a highly successful attorney at law, dedicated Cal Bear, and the most loyal of friends.

Randal, also affectionately known as Hoop, was born on November 1st, 1952, to Wayne and Barbara Hooper in Berkeley, California. He spent his youth involved in many sports after the family moved from Berkeley to Orinda, CA.

At Miramonte High School, Randal played football, basketball, and baseball. He then attended UC Berkeley on a baseball scholarship, following in his father’s footsteps. At Cal, he was a two time All Conference shortstop for the Bears.

After earning his Criminology degree, he played baseball in the Oakland A’s and Cleveland Indian’s organizations.

He also played in Italy, Australia and Canada, making lifelong friends along the way. He loved baseball, evident through all of the stories he told, and playing the game competitively until his late 50’ s.

Next, he graduated from University of Pacific, McGeorge School of Law and immediately went to work in Alameda County as a Deputy District Attorney. As a sole practitioner, he worked with his father for a number of years, and then alongside Bennett Johnson, LLP in Oakland for most of his 40 year law career.

During these years, he became a father to two wonderful sons, Ryan and Michael.

They shared his love for all sports, especially his love of baseball, and eventually both played in college. There was nothing he loved more than watching his sons play sports.

Randal loved many things. He loved his family, friends, Band of Brothers, all of his loyal golden retrievers and the Cal Bears. He loved family trips to Lair of the Bear, Yosemite, Tahoe and Kauai. He loved to backpack, hike, ski, and compete in all kinds of sports.

Randal was preceded in death by parents, Wayne and Barbara. Randal is survived by: his sons Ryan and Michael, his sister Rene, his brother Don, his brother in law Mike, his sister in law Laura, his nieces Jenny and Stephanie, his nephews Geoff and Doug, and his dogs Riley and Bogey.
