Cal men waste sizable lead, fall against Beavers

Ethan Thompson had 16 points, Maurice Calloo scored all his 14 points in the second half, and Oregon State rallied for a 7364 win over California on Saturday in Corvallis, Ore.

Cal’s leading scorer, Matt Bradley, injured his left ankle and left with 3: 31 left in the first half. He cheered on his team in the second half while in a boot and on crutches.

The Beavers ( 53, 11 Pac12) took their first lead in over 32 minutes when Thompson’s layup with 6: 10 left in the game made it 5856. Makale Foreman’s 3pointer for the Bears ( 56, 04) tied it at 63 with 3: 22 left, but Oregon State closed the game on a 101 run.

Foreman, Jarred Hyder and Andre Kelly had 12 points each for the Bears, who led 4028 early in the second half.

Wayne Tinkle was the only coach on the bench for the Beavers. Kerry Rupp, Marlon Stewart and Stephen Thompson were out due to COVID19 protocol, as was Beavers center Roman Silva.

# 21 Oregon 70, Stanford 56: Chris Duarte scored 23 points and the host Ducks ( 8- 1, 3- 0 Pac- 12) won their eighth straight game. Bryce Wills and Spencer Jones had 12 points apiece to pace the Cardinal ( 5- 3, 1- 1), whose four- game winning streak was snapped. Oregon’s 28 straight home wins are second most in school history and tied for the second- longest active streak in the NCAA.

No. 1 Gonzaga 85, USF 62: Corey Kispert scored 26 points as the Zags opened their WCC schedule with a rout. Gonzaga ( 10- 0) has won 44 consecutiv­e home games. Jamaree Bouyea scored 18 for the Dons ( 7- 5, 1- 1), who have lost 20 consecutiv­e games to Gonzaga since 2012.

Boise St. 87, San Jose St. 86: Derrick Alston Jr. scored 20 points with 10 rebounds, Abu Kigab scored the winning putback with 14 seconds left and Boise State ( 8- 1, 4- 0 Mountain West) extended its winning streak to eight with a close win in Phoenix, the Spartans’ new home amid coronaviru­s restrictio­ns in Santa Clara County. Richard Washington nailed a 3- pointer for San Jose State ( 1- 6, 0- 4) and an 86- 85 Spartans lead with 37 seconds to go, but missed a 3 as time expired. Boise State defeated San Jose State 106- 54 on Thursday, the largest margin of victory in a conference game in program history.

USC 64, Utah 46: Tahj Eaddy scored 18 points and the host Trojans ( 6- 2, 1- 1 Pac- 12) pulled away in the second half. The Utes ( 4- 3, 1- 2) were led by Ian Martinez with 10 points. Utah was limited to 28% field- goal shooting.

UCLA 65, Colorado 62: Jaime Jaquez Jr. scored 14 points as the Bruins ( 7- 2, 3- 0 Pac- 12) extended their home winning streak to 13. The Bruins never led by more than seven in the second half. McKinley Wright IV’s 3- point play for Colorado ( 7- 3, 1- 2) tied it for the last time at 54- all.

# 2 Baylor 76, Iowa St. 65: Jared Butler scored 21 points to lead four scorers in double figures for the visiting Bears ( 9- 0, 2- 0 Big 12). Javan Johnson led the Cyclones ( 2- 5, 0- 3) with 17 points.

# 8 Texas 84, # 3 Kansas 59: Courtney Ramey scored 18 points to lead five Longhorns in double figures, and Texas ( 8- 1, 2- 0 Big 12) matched the most lopsided win by an opponent in the history of Allen Fieldhouse. Jalen Wilson scored 20 points for the Jayhawks ( 8- 2, 1- 1).

Alabama 71, # 7 Tennessee 63: John Petty hit three critical 3- pointers and finished with 19 points, leading the visiting Crimson Tide ( 7- 3, 2- 0 SEC) to victory. The Volunteers ( 7- 1, 1- 1) struggled from the field, hitting 21 of 66 shots ( 32%).

Oklahoma 75, # 9 West Virginia 71: Umoja Gibson made eight 3- pointers and scored 29 points, and the host Sooners ( 6- 1, 2- 1 Big 12) won after blowing an 18- point halftime deficit to beat the Mountainee­rs ( 8- 3, 1- 2).

# 10 Iowa 77, # 14 Rutgers 75: Luka Garza had 25 points, 15 in the second half, and the visiting Hawkeyes ( 9- 2, 3- 1 Big Ten) won thanks to the Scarlet Knights’ free- throw struggles. Rutgers ( 7- 2, 3- 2) went 4- for- 12 against Iowa, which was 18- for- 23.

# 11 Creighton 67, Providence 65: Christian Bishop had a go- ahead dunk with 0.8 of a second left and the visiting Blue Jays ( 8- 2, 4- 1 Big East) held off a late rally to beat the Friars. Providence ( 7- 4, 3- 2) had rallied from 13 down to tie it with seven seconds left.

# 12 Missouri 81, Arkansas 68: Jeremiah Tilmon had 25 points and 11 rebounds, for the visiting Tigers ( 7- 1, 1- 1 SEC). The Razorbacks ( 9- 1, 1- 1) weres outrebound­ed 51- 36 and outscored 34- 22 in the paint without their best best interior player, Justin Smith, who injured his ankle Wednesday against Auburn.

Oklahoma St. 82, # 13 Texas Tech 77: Bryce Williams scored 15 points in his first start for the visiting Cowboys ( 7- 2, 1- 2 Big 12), including a steal and breakaway dunk in overtime. Mac McClung led the Red Raiders ( 8- 3, 1- 2) with 21 points.

# 15 Illinois 66, Purdue 58: Kofi Cockburn had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Ayo Dosunmu scored 12 points for the host Illini ( 8- 3, 4- 1 Big Ten). Trevion Williams had 14 points and eight rebounds for the Boilermake­rs ( 7- 5, 2- 3).

# 17 Michigan St. 84, Nebraska 77: Aaron Henry scored 27 points and the visiting Spartans ( 7- 3, 1- 3 Big Ten) ended a three- game losing streak. The Corhhusker­s ( 4- 7, 0- 4) lost their 21st straight Big Ten game.

# 2 Louisville 97, Bellarmine 46: Olivia Cochran’s 15 points led the host Cardinals ( 7- 0). Lauren Deel had eight points for the Knights ( 0- 5).

# 7 Baylor 74, TCU 50: Moon Ursin and NaLyssa Smith helped the visiting Bears ( 8- 1, 3- 0 Big 12) win a game where both coaches — Baylor’s Kim Mulkey and TCU’s Raegan Pebley — missed the game because of coronaviru­s contact tracing.

# 23 Gonzaga 69, St. Mary’s 37: Jenn Wirth scored 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and the host Bulldogs ( 8- 2, 3- 0 WCC) shut down the Gaels ( 2- 6, 0- 2).

Boise St. 70, San Jose St. 53: In Boise, Idaho, the Spartans ( 2- 2, 1- 2 Mountain West) fell to the Broncos ( 5- 0, 2- 0) despite the efforts of Tyra Whitehead and Raziya Potter ( 14 points each) and Cydni Lewis ( 10 points, six rebounds).

Loyola Marymount 66, Santa Clara 57: In Santa Cruz, Merle Wiehl scored 25 points but the Broncos ( 5- 4, 1- 2 WCC) fell to the Lions ( 2- 6, 1- 2).
