George Edward Krueger passed away on December 15, 2020 at CPMC. George was born on February 21, 1937 in San Francisco. The grandson of Italian immigrants on his mother’s side, he grew up in North Beach. His father, Clarence Krueger, a native of Wisconsin, was a cable car and trolley dispatcher for the Municipal Railway. His mother, Benedetta Calvo Krueger, was a homemaker. George attended St. Ignatius High School, the University of San Francisco, and USF Law School. At the end of law school, he entered the U. S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corp. As a JAG officer posted to Chicago, George met and married Carol McCauley. They were married for 56 years until Carol’s passing on June 23, 2020. George and Carol raised four kids, Christopher ( Kristine Burks), Kimberly Harrell ( Andrew), Lawrence ( Amie) and Jennifer Fong ( Derek). He greatly loved his eleven grandchildren: Joey, Julia, Anna, Kevin, Henry, Daniel, Benjamin, Audrey, Christopher, Kate and Owen.

After the Army service, George joined the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office in 1964. He served in that office for his entire post- JAG legal career. His wide range of legal assignments included the defense of civil litigation and giving legal advice to city boards, commissions and officials. George served as Chief Counsel for the San Francisco PUC and the Public Transportation Commission and sat as the City Attorney’s representative on the Health Service System Board. He interviewed lawyer and intern applicants to that office for many years. Mayor Willie Brown proclaimed February 26, 1997 as George Krueger Day in San Francisco in honor of his retirement and career accomplishments. Although George rose from relatively humble beginnings to become a father to a large family and a successful lawyer, he never lost his common touch and humility and was happiest in service to others. He knew what he loved and remained loyal to everything he loved for his whole life. The people and things he loved included: his wife, his kids, his grandkids, his Catholic faith, his friends from the Salesian Boys’ Club, St. Ignatius and USF, his colleagues from the City Attorney’s Office, visits to Tahoe in the summer, playing the stock market, classes at the Fromm Institute, the Giants, the 49ers, movies, theater, concerts at Davies Symphony Hall, good books, and great wine and food, especially ice cream.

A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at 2 p. m. Because of the pandemic, there will be no attendance, but it will be livestreamed over St. Ignatius Church’s Youtube channel at https:// youtu. be/ CiYkU7Wtc- 4. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Salesian Boys’ and Girls’ Club or the Fromm Institute at USF.
