San Francisco Chronicle - (Sunday)
Louis G. Haras
Louis G. Haras, age 89, of San Francisco, CA, died peacefully on January 22, 2021.
Born in Vourvoura, Greece on July 18, 1931. Son of the late George & Katerina Charalabopoulos.
Brother of the late Antonis Charalabopoulos.
Louis is survived by his wife of 46 years, Panagiota Haras, whom he married on July 14, 1974 in Velika, Greece.
Beloved father of Katerina Cazanis (Peter), Georgia Prountzos (Jimmy), & George Haras (Jaime).
Loving grandfather to Iliana, Giorgo, Dimitri & Nikolas.
Louis was an incredibly hardworking man who immigrated to the USA and literally lived the American dream. With just an elementary school education and a few dollars in his pocket, Louis began working hard in the restaurant industry, starting as a busboy at Westlake Joe’s and eventually moving up to a line cook. In 1978, he opened the Olympic Flame Cafe at 555 Geary Street in San Francisco, CA, where he worked harder than anyone his family has ever known until he sold the business in 2018.
There are not enough words to describe how strong a man he was, how funny he could be, and what a softie his grandchildren made him. His love of vanilla ice cream and his wife’s kourabiethes was a force to be reckoned with. While he endured a very tough final year of life, we will choose to remember him as the man who loved his family, provided everything they could possibly want or need, and stunned even his young grandchildren with how many chocolate chips he would put into their pancakes at his diner. May he rest in eternal peace knowing that he was loved and appreciated.
Funeral service to be held February 2, 2021 at 11 AM at the Greek Orthodox Memorial Park. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the service is limited to family only. In lieu of flowers, a monetary donation can be made in his memory to the Annunciation Cathedral Building Fund, 245 Valencia Street, San Francisco, CA 94103.
