Wiseman to sit for rest of trip
Warriors center James Wiseman is expected to miss at least two more games with a sprained left wrist.
Wiseman joined Golden State on its Texas trip to rehab with Dr. Rick Celebrini, the team’s director of sports medicine and performance. But head coach Steve Kerr said before Saturday night’s game against the Mavericks at American Airlines Center that Wiseman won’t play the rest of the road swing, meaning he’ll miss the games Monday and Tuesday in San Antonio as well.
The earliest Wiseman could return is Thursday’s home game against Orlando. Given that Kevon Looney is expected to miss at least another weekplus with a sprained left ankle, Golden State might not have anyone available taller than 6foot7 until Wiseman comes back.
It’s unclear whether the Warriors will waive someone to add another big man. But even if they do, they’ll have to wait for the new player to register negative coronavirus tests for six straight days before he can be cleared to play. The good news for Golden State: Forward Eric Paschall, who has excelled as a smallball center this season, appears close to coming back from right knee soreness. He missed his second consecutive game Saturday, but Kerr said Paschall “is doing better.”
With Looney, Wiseman, Paschall and Marquese Chriss (broken leg) sidelined, the Warriors have started the 6foot6 Draymond Green at center and the 6foot6 Juan ToscanoAnderson at power forward. Asked if there are any old teams he is inspired by that leaned on smallball lineups, Kerr mentioned the 201314 Spurs.
“They were one of the best passing teams ever, but they complemented that passing with great shooting,” Kerr said of a 201314 Spurs squad that went 6220 before winning the franchise’s first title in seven years. “My thought when I became the coach of the Warriors was that we had a similar makeup to that team.
“Great shooting guards and a lot of big men who could really pass, wings who could also pass. So, we’re really inspired by that group and run a lot of similar actions as them.”
