Barbara Ross
March 23, 1935-January 29, 2021
Barbara passed away at home in Carmichael surrounded by family after a battle with cancer. She was a native of San Francisco . She was married to her husband Gary for 63 years prior to his passing. During those years she raised many children, including two daughters, Lynn Ross (Uhazi), Cheryl Ross (Partee) and a son Gary Ross. She actively participated in the lives of her 12 grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren. Her home was never without a child in it. She attended ICA high school in San Francisco which is where her lifelong volunteer service started knitting sweaters for the Red Cross to deliver to servicemen. Over the next 68 years she received numerous awards, for her contributions to community. Her most recent, the prestigious William A. Dunlap Award from the Kiwanis Club, for outstanding service to Kiwanis and the community. Her dedication to the Boy Scouts of America earned her countless awards over her 45 years of service, including the Golden Empire Council Silver Beaver award for distinguished service, the council’s highest honor for volunteer scouts. She was a counselor for the Youth Environmental Leadership Conference sponsored by the US Forest Service for 20 years and coordinated the event for ten .
In 2009, she was presented with the Department of Veterans Affairs “Unsung Hero Award” in Washington DC for her work with Homeless Veterans Stand Down Program, a program she was dedicated to for 31 years.
Throughout her lifetime she was recognized by the State Senate, Assembly and California Department of Veterans Affairs.
But most importantly, she was the family matriarch.
At the time of her death her 6 year old great-grandson summed it up for all of us, “my heart hurts and I already miss her.”
If you would like to honor her and help others donations would be greatly appreciated by the American Legion Youth Program, Kiwanis Family House or Ryan Partee Scholarship Fund .
There will be a private family burial. Celebration of Life at a later date.
