Stanford, Cal men pull off big victories

Spencer Jones made a careerhigh five 3pointers and scored 17 points, and host Stanford held off Utah for a 7366 win on Saturday night.

Jones helped the Cardinal (138, 96 Pac12) survive a late challenge with two 3pointers in the final 5:02.

The Cardinal shot 54% from the field.

Utah (98, 67) jumped to a 122 lead before Stanford outscored Utah 308 over the final 13 minutes of the half.

Utah’s Timmy Allen scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half and Branden Carlson had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Cal 71, Colorado 62: At Haas Pavilion, Matt Bradley scored a careerhigh 28 points and his 3pointer with 40 seconds left helped seal Cal’s win.

The win ended a sevengame skid, with losses by an average of seven points a contest.

Jalen Celestine added 13 points for Cal (815, 313 Pac12). Colorado (166, 105) was led by McKinley Wright IV with 13 points.

WOMEN

Gonzaga tops Santa Clara

Melody Kempton and twins Jenn and LeeAnne Wirth each had 12 points and No. 17 Gonzaga used a big second quarter to defeat Santa Clara 6750 in Spokane, Wash.

The Bulldogs (182, 130 WCC), who have won 17 straight, matched their lowest opening quarter of the season but still led 128 lead after one period.

The teams swapped 3pointers in the first 70 seconds of the second quarter before the Bulldogs took over on both ends, scoring 19 straight to lead 3411 at the half.

Santa Clara (128, 86), which had won four of five, got 11 points from Merle Wiehl.

BYU 79, St. Mary’s 61: After leading 38-37 at halftime, the Cougars pulled away in the Gaels’ final home game. Paisley Harding led BYU (14-3, 10-2 WCC) with 28 points, while Lauren Gustin added 16 points and 12 rebounds. Taycee Wedin paced St. Mary’s (5-16, 3-12) with 17 points. USF at Portland, postponed: The game at the Pilots’ Chiles Center was postponed due to winter weather. The teams reschedule­d for Sunday at 4 p.m.
