Richard Childs Schroter
Richard Childs Schroter was born on May 16, 1927, as the eldest child of Oda Childs and Charles Schroter of Baltimore, Maryland. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 18, 2020. Dick grew up in the suburbs of Baltimore, and attended Johns Hopkins University and later after a short stint in the NROTC, graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. While in college, he enjoyed Lacrosse and 150Lb. football. When a new Job with Kaiser Aluminum offered him the chance to move to California, he accepted as a chance to escape the racial, religious and gender prejudice he grew up with and to “reinvent himself”. While sailing in San Francisco he met and subsequently married Mary Flehr in 1954. Dick had a love for sailing, skiing and the outdoors, and he and Mary were tennis regulars at the Sleepy Hollow club. In keeping with his love for the outdoors, most summers were spent at the family cabin in Tahoe for water skiing and sailing. He passes on his love of engineering and projects to his sons. He would like to be remembered for his passion for excellence in construction and contributions to the industry through teaching design and promoting the development of industry standards. His wife Mary and his sister Ann predeceased Richard. He is survived by, sons Chad and his wife, Alisa and Eric and his wife, Karen and grandchildren Gavin, Kayla, Stephanie, Lauren, Ian, and Jared. There will be a private family service. Instead of flowers, donations in his honor may be made to a favorite charity or to the Construction Specifications Institute Foundation, to support education and scholarships.
