Eleanore was born April 19, 1941 to Nell and Walter Howard. A life-long resident of The City, Eleanore grew up in the Mission District and remained in the neighborhood her whole life, continuing a tradition established by her grandparents, Bridgit and Michael Walsh, over 100 years ago. She attended St. James Grammar school and was a proud graduate of the Immaculate Conception Academy. Walking down Dolores Street to school with her cousin, Nancy Ingram, were fond and often shared memories.

Her interest in business led to a long career in banking. Fond memories of work and friendships were important highlights at Crocker Bank. Eleanore was appreciated by colleagues for her integrity and strong work ethic. She was an active member of St. James Parish following a commitment of support that spanned three family generations. Going to see Broadway shows at the Curran, Orpheum or Golden Gate theaters were treasured evenings for Eleanore and those who joined her. Eleanore’s heritage was Irish and English, and she loved to travel to Ireland and England with her sister Carol to visit family and to enjoy a martini at Duke’s Hotel and dinner at Rule’s.

She will be greatly missed by her cousins, all of whom treasure memories of growing up in the mission with Eleanore. Wonderful memories that included playing in Dolores Park, trips to the New Eagle Market, to Lucca’s for raviolis, and Saturday afternoon walks to Mission Street for a movie at the New Mission or the El Capitan. Embraced by younger cousins, she was given the nickname “The Duchess of Dolores Street” – a title she dearly loved. Eleanore was preceded in death by her sister Carol, her loving parents and many Irish aunts. She is survived and will be missed by her cousins; James Newhoff, Michael Newhoff, Nancy Ingram and Bill Clune, as well as the many second and third generation cousins who will fondly remember “The Duchess of Dolores Street”.

In remembrance of Eleanore’s life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to St. Anthony Foundation.
