Poor shooting dooms Cal in loss to Huskies

The Cal men’s basketball team couldn’t shoot straight Saturday night, and so it lost 6251 at Washington.

The Bears (817, 315 Pac12) shot 27% from the field, a mere 18% from 3point range (3for17), and hit only 60% at the foul line, where they missed 10 shots, almost as many as Washington took. The result was their ninth defeat in their past 10 games.

Guard Matt Bradley scored 13 points, leading Cal in scoring for the eighth game in a row, but he missed 13 of 16 shots from the field and all of his four 3point attempts. Teammate Grant Anticevich missed 11 of his 15 tries.

Quade Green scored 17 and Jamal Bey added 15 points and nine rebounds to lead Washington (517, 413).

Anticevich had eight points, seven rebounds and two blocks. The 6foot8 senior from Australia also missed his three 3point tries and his one shot from the foul line.

Junior forward Andre Kelly scored 12 points for Cal.

Cal has three games left, including Thursday, when Oregon State visits Berkeley.

Santa Clara 86, Pepperdine 82: Josip Vrankic had 26 points and Jalen Williams added 17 as the host Broncos edged the Waves. Santa Clara (10-6, 4-4 WCC), which had lost four in a row at home, scored 52 second-half points. Colbey Ross had 26 points and six assists for Pepperdine (10-9, 6-4).

Arizona 81, #17 USC 72: James Akinjo scored 20 for the visiting Wildcats (15-8, 9-8 Pac-12), who halted a seven-game winning streak by the Pac-12-leading Trojans (18-4, 12-3). “It showed we’re a good team and can beat anybody right now,” said Akinjo, The Chronicle’s high school player of the year in 2018 while at Salesian-Richmond.

Colorado 61, Oregon State 57: McKinley Wright IV scored 21 points as the Buffaloes (17-7, 11-6 Pac-12) won at Oregon State (11-11, 7-9). Colorado has won five conference road games, its most since 1962.

Oregon 67, Utah 64: The Ducks (14-4, 9-3 Pac-12) were led in Eugene by LJ Figueroa with 15 points. The Utes (9-10, 6-9) got 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists from Pelle Larsson.

UCLA 80, Arizona State 79: Jaylen Clark’s free throw with one second to go won it for the Bruins (16-5, 12-3 Pac-12), who got 17 points from Cody Riley. Tyger Campbell made two free throws with 39 seconds left to tie for it for UCLA. Remy Martin scored 25 for the visiting Sun Devils (7-11, 4-8).

#1 Gonzaga 106, San Diego 69: Drew Timme scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half and Jalen Suggs added 17 as the Bulldogs (22-0, 13-0 WCC) won their 26th straight and 49th in a row at home. Josh Parish led the Toreros (3-8, 2-5) with 13 points.

#5 Illinois 94, Minnesota 63: Ayo Dosunmu had 19 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists and Kofi Cockburn scored 22 in 24 minutes as the visiting Illini (15-5, 12-3 Big Ten) beat the Gophers (13-10, 6-10).

Duke 66, #7 Virginia 65: Freshman Jaemyn Brakefield hit the go-ahead basket on a reverse layup with 1:58 left and the Blue Devils (10-8, 8-6 ACC) came up with a final-possession stop to beat the visiting Cavaliers (15-5, 11-3).

#8 Alabama 82, Vanderbilt 78: Jaden Shackelfor­d scored 27 for the host Crimson Tide (18-5, 13-1), who can clinch a share of their first SEC regular-season title in 19 years with a win. Scotty Pippen Jr. scored 24 for the Commodores (6-12, 2-10).

#9 Oklahoma 66, Iowa State 56: Austin Reaves put up 20 points for the Sooners (14-5, 9-4 Big 12) against the host Cyclones (2-16, 0-13).

#10 Villanova 68, UConn 60: Collin Gillespie scored 20 and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the host Wildcats (14-3, 9-2 Big East) against the Huskies (10-6, 7-6).

#13 West Virginia 84, #12 Texas 82: Sean McNeil, scoreless in the first half, scored 16 points to help the visiting Mountainee­rs (15-6, 8-4 Big 12) erase a 19-point second-half deficit against the host Longhorns (13-6, 7-5). Courtney Ramey scored 28 points for Texas.

#23 Kansas 67, #15 Texas Tech 61: David McCormack had 17 points as the host Jayhawks (17-7, 11-5 Big 12) beat the Red Raiders (14-7, 6-6). Marcus Santos-Silva and Kevin McCullar each scored 12 for Texas Tech.

#16 Florida State 79, Pittsburgh 72: Raiquan Gray had 16 points for the Seminoles (13-3, 9-2 ACC) against the host Panthers (9-9, 5-8).

Kentucky 70, #19 Tennessee 55: Isaiah Jackson scored 16 and Davion Mintz had 15 as the visiting Wildcats (8-13, 7-7 SEC) won their third in a row. Victor Bailey scored 18 for the Volunteers (15-6, 8-6).

#20 Missouri 93, South Carolina 78: Dru Smith scored 17 for the visiting Tigers (14-6, 7-6 SEC) against the Gamecocks (5-11, 3-9).

#25 San Diego St. 75, Fresno St. 57: Jordan Schakel scored 14 points, 12 on 3-pointers in the first half, as the visiting Aztecs (17-4, 11-3 Mountain West) won their eighth in a row. Fresno State (9-9, 7-9) has lost its past 28 against Top 25 teams.
