Morikawa leads despite late stumble

-

PGA champion Collin Morikawa made seven birdies in an eighthole stretch Saturday and made it look as though no one could catch him. All it took was two bad holes to turn the World Golf Championships’ Workday Open in Bradenton, Fla., into a chase.

The PGA champion and Cal alum shot 5underpar 67 at the Concession Golf Club, a reasonable score except for what it could have been. When he drove to the front of the green on the 316yard 12th hole and made an 8foot birdie, he was at 17under par and no one else was closer than five shots.

Six holes and two bogeys later, Morikawa was at 15under 201. He leads by two over Brooks Koepka (70) and Billy Horschel (69). Rory McIlroy, who made a double bogey for the second straight day, shot a 66 that included an eagle on the par5 13th, and was four behind. San Juan native Rafael Campos took a share of the lead in the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open, waiting out a series of rain delays to shoot 5under 67 at Grand Reserve in Rio Grande. Grayson Murray (65) joined him at 14under 202. Stanford alum Brandon Wu, the secondround leader, shot 71 and was at 12under. Nelly Korda surged into the lead in the Gainbridge LPGA with a 4under 68 to take a oneshot lead at 13under 203 over Patty Tavatanakit (66). Hall of Famer Annika

Sorenstam, playing for the first time in more than 12 years after retiring, was in last place after a 79 that dropped her 22 shots behind Korda. Mike Weir shot a 5under 67 to build a twoshot lead at 13under after the second round of Cologuard Classic in Tucson, Ariz., putting Phil Mickelson — nine shots back after a 72 — in a deep hole in his bid to win his third straight PGA Tour Champions events.
