Silvio Richard Barretta

Silvio Richard Barretta passed away at the age of 85 years old in South San Francisco on 2/26/2021. He passed peacefully after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia.

Silvio was born on 11/24/1935 in San Francisco, California to Parents Andrew Henry Barretta & Angelina Teresa Barretta. Silvio was the oldest of 3 siblings and is survived by both sisters, Virgina Wood& Maryann List.

Silvio Graduated Lincoln High School in 1953 then enlisted in the Navy serving during the Korean War from 1954 to 1957. He served on the USS Pickaway and became well trained in morse code. When he came home on leave, he would train all of us with a little “dot..dot.. dit..dit”

Silvio then studied at Western Kentucky University earning a MA in English Literature.

Silvio married Myral Martin in 1961. They had one Daughter, Jennifer Lynn Barretta and adopted Marty Hill who was Myral’s son. They moved to Santa Rosa, CA where Silvio began his career as an English teacher. He loved teaching! He enjoyed his students so much that he frequently invited them on his back packing trips in the Trinity Alps along with his two Saint Bernards Amelia & Gano.

He taught in the Larkspur School District for thirty years. English literature was what he loved most to teach until later was asked to teach 6th grade drama.

Mr. “B’s” school plays were extremely well attended!

Silvio had great enthusiasm for the outdoors and traveling. He lived the majority of his adult life in the Marina District on Fillmore Street and truly loved San Francisco with all it had to offer. Silvio was fun loving &high spirited. Everyone who met him not only loved him but were truly inspired by him!

Silvio is survived by: Myral M. Vogeding, Jennifer & Randy Holland, Marty & Roxaine Hill,

Grand Children: Austin Holland and Alyson Craven, Marty Hill Jr.

Great Grand Children: James Canon Craven, Graham Craven Nieces, Nephews: Kenny Foster, Fred Wood, Keith Hoyt & Loren Frediani.
