Nats’ Schwarber on IL with hamstring injury

-

Nationals left fielder Kyle Schwarber, who set a franchise record by hitting 16 home runs in June, suffered a “significant” hamstring injury during a game against the Dodgers on Friday, manager Dave Martinez said Saturday, and will be out indefinitely.

Schwarber said he does not need a procedure to repair damage to his hamstring. Instead, he will use compression treatment to reduce swelling. Rest and strengthening exercises will follow.

“It’s not the best, but not the worst,” Schwarber said. “Just got to take it for what it is.”

Schwarber was placed on the 10day injured list Saturday in a series of moves made by the Nationals, who also put catcher Alex Avila on the IL because of a calf strain and acquired infielder Alcides Escobar from the Royals for cash considerations.

Schwarber was injured Friday after he singled to the rightcenter field. He grimaced while rounding first, then made a hard stop as Cody Bellinger cut off the line drive. Schwarber reached for his right hamstring after he returned to first base.

“A lot of thoughts go through your head,” Schwarber said. “You’re hoping it’s not bad. You know the kind of state the team’s in right now in terms of the injuries coming around here. The biggest thing that just popped in my head was hopefully it’s not too serious. It wasn’t the worst news I could get.”
