Carmel Evelyn Coghlan, 94, passed away on June 30, 2021 in her San Francisco home surrounded by her seven children. Carmel, daughter of John and Rose Casey was born in San Francisco and raised on Dewey Blvd. She attended St. Cecilia’s Grammar School, Presentation High School and San Francisco City College.

Carmel had a wonderful life. She loved her family, her City and especially her husband. The stories of her youth in San Francisco entertained everyone. She spent many years as a City Guide leading tours of many San Francisco landmarks and was a docent at St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Carmel was smart, beautiful, and hilarious. She was still doing crossword puzzles – quickly and in pen - until just a few weeks before she died. She seemed indestructible and we hoped she would live forever. Carmel married Frank Coghlan in 1949 and loved him until the day she died. They had a wonderful life together raising children and enjoying each other tremendously. They spent many splendid summers at Tahoe, did some traveling and enjoyed life. Together they had seven children, 20 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren (and counting).

Carmel was the matriarch of a large extended family and will be missed by so many. She leaves her sons Edward (Dianne) Coghlan and Patrick (Julie) Coghlan and her daughters Kathleen (James) Toomey, Mary (Channing) Rudd, Sally (Steven) McDonald, Ellen (Peter) Degolia, and Joan (Vincent) Fausone. She also leaves her grandchildren Kelly (James) Sheridan, Casey, Kevin and Mary Clare Coghlan, Tootsa (Jeffrey) Farrington, Colleen, William, Matthew and Bridget Toomey, Clare (Joseph) Kubiak, Patrick Rudd, Edward (Grace) McDonald, Timothy McDonald, Peter (Laura) Degolia Jr., Leigh (Christopher) Garvin, Jeffrey Degolia, Vincent and Jack Fausone and Emma Coghlan. She also leaves eight great grandchildren Sydney, Jaymee, and Kathryn Sheridan, Harlee Farrington, James and Thomas Kubiak, and Trip and Luke Garvin, and those who will continue to arrive in the next months and years. She is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren.

Carmel was predeceased by her husband Frank Coghlan, her granddaughter Mary Margaret McDonald and her siblings, Mayrose Baisch, Jack Casey, Virginia Murphy, Michael Casey and Alice Marie Casey. That reunion is undoubtedly making waves throughout the heavens.
