Nationals’ Scherzer scratched from start

-

Nationals ace Max Scherzer was scratched from his start at Baltimore on Saturday with what the team described as mild right triceps discomfort.

Manager Dave Martinez said Scherzer had an MRI exam and it was “extremely clean.”

Scherzer, who is is 74 with a 2.83 ERA in 18 starts, told MLB.com that he noticed the triceps issue after taking batting practice Tuesday. He said he threw a bullpen session Wednesday and his arm again didn’t feel normal.

“I couldn't recover from the bullpen session,” Scherzer told MLB.com. “It just made trying to start tonight extremely risky, and so we just backed off.”

Scherzer, a threetime Cy Young Award winner who has been the subject of trade speculation, said he expects to make his next scheduled start.
