Houston’s nohit bid comes up just short

- TODAY’S TV HIGHLIGHTS

Framber Valdez used so many pitches as he struggled to find the zone early on Saturday that he was forced to leave the game after the sixth inning despite not giving up a hit.

Houston’s bullpen took over after the lefthander was pulled and lost the nohit try in the eighth inning as the Astros sent the Texas Rangers to their seasonworst 11th straight loss, 41, in Houston.

Valdez (62) needed 99 pitches to get through six innings, his count built up by walking a careerhightying six. Manager Dusty Baker said there was no thought of sending Valdez out for the seventh.

“You’ve got to think logically about what’s best for him and best for his next start,” Baker said.

After Bryan Abreu extended the nohit bid through seven, Ryne Stanek came on in the eighth and Isiah KinerFalefa hit a single on his second pitch.

Angels 2, Twins 1: Patrick Sandoval had his no-hit bid broken up with one out in the ninth inning on a soft double by Brent Rooker, and Los Angeles beat host Minnesota. Sandoval struck out a career-high 13.

Marlins 3, Padres 2: Fernando Tatis Jr. hit his NL-leading 30th homer for an early lead but Miami rallied late to beat visiting San Diego.

Dodgers 1, Rockies 0: Austin Barnes homered early, Kenley Jansen preserved the lead late and host Los Angeles snapped a three-game losing streak.

Yankees 4, Red Sox 3: Rougned Odor’s two-run double highlighted a four-run rally in the eighth inning after his two errors helped Boston build an early lead, and New York won on the road.

Rays 8, Indians 2: Austin Meadows hit two two-run homers, Ji-Man Choi had three RBIs and visiting Tampa Bay extended its winning streak over Cleveland to 11 games.

Brewers 6, White Sox 1: Rowdy Tellez hit his first two homers as a Brewer, Corbin Burnes pitched six strong innings and host Milwaukee beat Chicago.

Blue Jays 10, Mets 3: All-Star Teoscar Hernandez hit two of Toronto’s five home runs and the Blue Jays beat host New York to stop a three-game losing streak.

Reds 5, Cardinals 3: Jesse Winker homered, doubled and drove in four runs, Luis Castillo pitched seven effective innings and host Cincinnati beat St. Louis.

Braves 15, Phillies 3: Freddie Freeman, Abraham Almonte, Ozzie Albies, Austin Riley and Joc Peterson all homered in Philadelphia for Atlanta.

Royals 9, Tigers 8: Salvador Perez and Carlos Santana hit three-run homers to power Kansas City past visiting Detroit.

Orioles 5, Nationals 3: Matt Harvey allowed one hit in six scoreless innings in another outstanding performance and host Baltimore held on to beat fading Washington.

D’backs 7, Cubs 3: Daulton Varsho homered in his third straight game and hit a tiebreaking single in a three-run seventh inning, and Arizona handed host Chicago its 18th loss in 24 games.
