D’backs lefty no-hits Padres in first start

-

Diamondbacks rookie left-hander Tyler Gilbert, who grew up in Felton in Santa Cruz County, became the fourth pitcher to throw a no-hitter in his first big-league start, lifting host Arizona over the San Diego Padres 7-0 on Saturday night.

The last to accomplish the feat in his first start was Bobo Holloman of the St. Louis Browns on May 6, 1953. Bumpus Jones also did it in his major-league debut with the Cincinnati Reds on Oct. 15, 1892, and Theodore Breitenstein threw one for the Browns on Oct. 4, 1891.

Gilbert fanned Trent Grisham and Ha-Seong Kim in the ninth before Tommy Pham lined out to center fielder Ketel Marte. Joyous Diamondbacks mobbed the hero who spent six years in the minors and was taken in the Triple-A part of the last Rule 5 draft.

“Crazy,” Gilbert said. “It’s not going to hit me for probably another day. I don’t know what just happened.”

Gilbert, 27, rarely broke 90 mph, peppering the Padres with breaking pitches. His defense bailed him out on several hard-hit balls.

Dodgers 2, Mets 1: Cody Bellinger hit a tie-breaking double in the 10th inning to lift visiting Los Angeles. Will Smith had homered in the seventh for the first hit off New York’s Taijuan Walker.

Red Sox 16, Orioles 2: Chris Sale returned from two years off for Tommy John surgery with eight strikeouts in five innings as host Boston dealt Baltimore a 10th straight loss.

Phillies 6, Reds 1: Matt Moore and his bullpen took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and host Philadelphia two-hit Cincinnati.

Brewers, Pirates split: Rookie Aaron Ashby and three relievers combined on a four-hitter, and visiting Milwaukee won 6-0 to split a day-night doubleheader. In the opener, Kevin Newman tied a major-league record with four doubles, and the Pirates won 14-4.

Braves 12, Nationals 2: Ozzie Albies homered for the fourth straight game, and Dansby Swanson had two homers and six RBIs for visiting Atlanta.

Marlins 5, Cubs 4: Magneuris Sierra hit a tie-breaking single in the eighth inning for host Miami. Chicago made four errors in its 10th straight loss.

Tigers 6, Indians 4: Miguel Cabrera failed to hit career homer No. 500, but his leadoff walk sparked host Detroit’s two-run eighth.

Yankees 7, White Sox 5: Joey Gallo hit a two-run shot in the 10th inning for his second homer of the game, Aaron Judge went deep again and had four RBIs, and visiting New York outlasted Chicago.

Cardinals 9, Royals 4: Nolan Arenado homered and drove in four runs for visiting St. Louis.

Twins 12, Rays 0: Kenta Maeda pitched six innings and Luis Arraez hit a two-run homer for host Minnesota.
