Henley closer to ending drought

-

Russell Henley was grateful to get through the round with the lead at the Wyndham Championship. He hopes to hold on for 18 more holes for his first PGA Tour victory in four years.

Henley shot a 1-under-par 69 on Saturday, giving him a three-stroke lead heading into Sunday’s final round.

Henley, who tied the lowest 36-hole score on tour this year Friday, couldn’t keep up that pace at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. Yet, he rolled in a 33-foot putt for eagle on the par-5 15th and went on to finish at 15-under 195 as he tries to win his fourth career title and first since the 2017 Shell Houston Open. Tyler McCumber shot a 66 and was second at 12-under. He had missed his past six cuts before getting hot this week.

The group of six four shots behind at 11-under included Rory Sabbatini, Scott Piercy and Roger Sloan, each now on track to crack the FedEx Cup’s top 125 point total, meaning they would be eligible for the postseason that starts Thursday at the Northern Trust in New Jersey.

Former FedEx Cup champion Justin Rose, who started the week 138th in the standings, shot 69 after a bogey on the final hole. He’s 126th in the projections.

LPGA: Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn bogeyed the final two holes for an even-par 72 at windy Dumbarnie Links, leaving her tied for the lead with England’s Charley Hull and Southern California native Ryann O’Toole in the Women’s Scottish Open in Fife.

Three strokes ahead entering the round, Jutanugarn had five birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey in winds gusting to 28 mph.

O’Toole shot 68 and Hull carded a third consecutive 69 to match Jutanugarn at 9-under 207.

European Tour: Rasmus Hojgaard shot a 10-under 62 to take a three-shot lead into the final round of Cazoo Classic in Kent, England.

Jordan Smith and Calum Hill were tied for second, with second-round co-leader Dale Whitnell and Richard Bland another shot back.

PGA Tour Champions: In Calgary, Alberta, Doug Barron eagled the par-5 18th for his second straight 6-under 64 and a one-stroke lead over Stephen Ames, Steve Flesch and firstround leader Billy Mayfair in the Shaw Charity Classic.

Barron, 52, also had five birdies and a bogey at Canyon Meadows. He won the 2019 Dick’s Sporting Goods Open for his lone tour title.

U.S. Amateur: North Carolina junior Austin Greaser and Michigan State senior James Piot advanced to Sunday’s 36-hole final at Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh.
