Alfons George Wagner
Berkeley, CA ALFONS GEORGE WAGNER passed away peacefully on August 2, 2021, after a long and valiant struggle with Lewy Body Dementia. He was born on July 18, 1938 in Greenport, Long Island, New York, son of Anna Benedict and Alfons Wagner. He graduated from Union College, Schenectady NY and from Golden Gate Law School, San Francisco, CA. He was the loving and devoted husband of Joan McLean and loving father to William Charles Wagner of St Helena, Ca and Evan Alfons Wagner of Rockaway Beach, NY, and dear grandfather of Beatrix Wagner of St Helena. CA For many years he served as first a public Prosecutor and then established a distinguished career as a court-appointed private Defense Attorney in capital punishment cases, fighting diligently and nobly for the rights of clients otherwise condemned by society in Oakland, CA. He loved nature and spent many a week camping with Joan and backpacking, skiing and hiking in the
Sierras with his sons. His many interests included birdwatching, sailing, classical music, reading fine literature and keeping up with the news. He also loved to travel and went all over Europe with Joan. He is survived by his dear wife, Joan , his sons William and Evan, his granddaughter Beatrix, Joan’s children Kajsa, Ian and Rory, his best friends and former law partner Steve and Linda Skinner, and the mother of his children, Katrina Wagner.
