San Francisco Chronicle - (Sunday)
Ken Allen Kosloff
Ken passed peacefully on the evening of June 14, 2021, at home with his wife Debra. He was being treated for an aggressive form of prostate cancer; however, it was his recent diagnosis of ALS which was the reason he left us so suddenly.
Ken was born in Los Angeles in 1949, to Lou and Ruth Kosloff. The family, including his 9-1/2 year old sister Luanne, soon moved to a horse ranch on the outskirts of Santa Barbara. He went to San Marcos High School and then on to Santa Barbara Junior College before transferring to the UCSB. At UCSB he joined the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity, became President of the fraternity in 1971 and remains close to many of his “brothers”.
Ken’s vocational dream was to be a teacher. He taught sixth grade and special education from 1974 to 1976, soon thereafter deciding to change carriers and move to the Bay Area to accept a job as sales manager for a rock quarry. For the next ten years Ken worked in sales for the rock quarry and later for a regional asphalt manufacturer. From 1986 until 2021 he was a consultant specializing in construction management and reserve planning for condominium communities and homeowners associations. He started his practice in Santa Clara and has worked throughout California and was a certified instructor for both the California Association of Community Managers (CACM) and the Community Associations Institute (CAI). In 2002 he merged his company with Richard Avelar & Associates in Oakland where he continued as a construction consultant, developed specializations in solar energy and rebuilding communities after wildfire. Ken never saw his profession as work and truly enjoyed every opportunity to collaborate with his colleagues and clients.
In 1990, a mutual friend introduced Ken to his wife, Debra Warren, and by 1992 they were an inseparable pair. They were married in 1999 and moved to Marin County shortly thereafter. Ken loved their home in San Rafael, spending time at Dillon Beach or Truckee with family, as well as getting together with friends and fraternity brothers near and far.
Ken, like his dad, had grown into an entertainer, just one of his many admirable traits. He loved to tell stories, and he was good at it. He’d embellish them, but you couldn’t put your finger on what or where he was embellishing. So, you had no choice and just believed every word he said.
Ken is survived by his wife, Debra, and their extended family along with niece Adrienne (David) Manhan, and nephew Gordon Webb and their families in Southern California. Ken was special to so many because people were so special to Ken. He will remain in our hearts forever.
A private Celebration of Life was held for Ken on August 14th at Unity in Marin.
