Whitecaps stay ahead of Earthquake­s

Brian White scored all three goals and the Vancouver Whitecaps beat the visiting Earthquake­s 3-0 on Saturday night to improve their playoff hopes.

The American striker scored in the 26th, 59th and 73rd minutes for his first MLS hat trick. Maxime Crepeau made five saves for his third straight shutout.

The Quakes (8-11-9) are tied for ninth in the West with LAFC at 33 points. With the win, Vancouver remained in eighth with 37 points. Elsewhere in MLS, Phelipe Megiolaro had his first MLS shutout and host FC Dallas tied 0-0 with Minnesota United, which has 38 points and holds the seventh and final playoff spot in the West . ... Daryl Dike headed home a corner kick in the seventh minute of stoppage time to help host Orlando City beat D.C. United 2-1 to snap a five-game winless streak and vault from out of playoff position and into third place with 42 points in the tightly contested Eastern Conference. D.C. (40 points) is fourth as six teams are bunched between 39 and 42 points for the final five playoff spots in the East . ... Romell Quioto scored twice and Montreal (40 points) beat Atlanta United 2-1 to jump into fifth place. Atlanta (39 points) fell below the playoff line . ... Cecilio Dominguez scored a goal in each half and last-place Austin beat visiting Real Salt Lake 2-1. Salt Lake (11-11-6, 39 points) is fifth in the West. In the English Premier League, Chelsea moved at least temporaril­y into first place as Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell scored late goals to seal a 3-1 win over Southampto­n. At Old Trafford, second-place Manchester United dropped points with a 1-1 draw with Everton. Liverpool, tied with Man U with 14 points, can retake first with a win Sunday at home against Manchester City. Elsewhere in Europe, hours after Barcelona president Joan Laporta said embattled coach Ronald Koeman would keep his job, Atletico Madrid beat Barcelona 2-0 in Spain.
