Susan S. Zegans

-

Susan Zegans passed away peacefully with family around her on September 18, 2021 in White River Junction, Vermont . Susan was born in Long Island City, NY in 1937, the loved only child of Mickey and Lillian Schwartz. Though growing up during the Depression and WWII, Susan thrived in the warmth of family and friends. She made the most of her education and developed lifelong friends among her classmates at Midwood High School and Vassar College. That their daughter was able to attend Vassar was something of a miracle to her parents, who had not been to college. In her work life, Susan shared her compassionate presence and intelligence as an educator at the high school and college level and later as a social worker/therapist. Her lifelong interest in poetry found expression both as reader and writer.

During college, Susan met the love of her life,

Leonard S. Zegans and they married after her junior year. Sue and Lenny later welcomed sons Marc and Michael Zegans, followed by grandchildren Maxwell, Molly, Rebecca, Wren, and Kate. Happily married for more than 50 years, the pair enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, hiking, music, museums and entertaining friends in their home. Susan’s special blend of empathy, insight and willingness to listen attracted many friends over the decades; the depth and durability of these relationships is a testament to her ability to connect with others.

The Zegans family appreciates the care and kindness that Susan received from many aides, nurses, and physicians during her struggle with Parkinson’s disease. She is loved and will be missed by many. Condolences may be made to her family at an online guestbook at www. knightfuneralhome.com
