Cal to play for men’s water polo title

Nikolaos Papanikola­ou scored two goals in overtime and junior Garrett Dunn added the game-clincher with 19 seconds left as the No. 3 Cal men’s water polo team won15-12 at No. 1 UCLA in the semifinals of the NCAA championsh­ips.

Max Casabella had six goals and two assists for the Bears (21-4), who will meet USC in Sunday’s title match at 2 p.m. The Trojans beat UC Davis 11-8.

College volleyball: Stanford was no match for host Minnesota in the second round of the NCAA women’s tournament.

Despite 15 kills by Kendall Kipp, the No. 18 Cardinal (19-11) were overwhelme­d by the No. 12 Golden Gophers 25-20, 25-18, 25-17.

Soccer: Felipe Mora and Santiago Moreno scored and the host Portland Timbers advanced to the MLS Cup final with a 2-0 victory over Real Salt Lake in the Western Conference final.

Portland, which won the MLS Cup in 2015, will host the winner of Sunday’s Eastern Conference final between the Philadelph­ia Union and NYCFC next Saturday. A fluke goal — Arthur Masuaku’s aimless cross attempt curled into the goal in the 87th minute — gave host West Ham a 3-2 win over Chelsea, a result that knocked Chelsea out of the English Premier League lead.

It meant Chelsea dropped from first to third after Manchester City (3-1 at Watford) and Liverpool (1-0 at Wolverhamp­ton, scoring in extra time) won.

Tennis: Daniil Medvedev beat Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 6-4 to seal Russia’s victory over Germany in the Davis Cup semifinals in Madrid. Russia will play Croatia on Sunday for the title.

Winter sports: Italy’s Sofia Goggia won a World Cup downhill by a wide margin for the second straight day at Lake Louise, Alberta, as she shapes up as a big favorite to defend her Olympic gold in two months.

American Breezy Johnson was the runner-up, as she was on Friday. Two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time overall World Cup champion Mikaela Shiffrin of the U.S. wound up 38th, a day after finishing 26th in her first downhills in nearly two full years. Aleksander Aamodt Kilde of Norway captured a World Cup downhill race for his second win in two days at Beaver Creek, Colo. Ryan Cochran-Siegle, the top American, was sixth.

Obituary: Pro Football Hall of Famer Claude Humphrey, one of the NFL’s most fearsome pass rushers during the 1970s with the Atlanta Falcons but long overlooked on mostly losing teams, died at 77 in Memphis. No cause was given.
