Gut-Behrami wins, but Shiffrin keeps overall lead

-

Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami edged Italy’s Sofia Goggia, with American Mikaela Shiffrin in third for a star-powered, Olympiccontending podium in a World Cup super-G race in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

Shiffrin retained her lead in the overall World Cup standings. Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt skied to his third win of the season and seventh overall after dominating World Cup men’s slalom race in Val d’Isere, France. Shaun White will have to wait at least one more week to get an inside track on a trip to his fifth Olympics after an eighth-place finish at the U.S. Grand Prix, snowboarding’s first qualifying event, at Copper Mountain, Colo.

The three-time gold medalist could not put together a clean run on any of his three trips down the halfpipe. Ruka Hirano of Japan won the contest with a run of 89.25 that featured five straight double-cork tricks.

Americans Taylor Gold and Chase Josey finished fifth and sixth, meaning they, along with White, will head into next week’s Dew Tour still in search of a top finish that would vault them ahead in the race for three men’s spots on the U.S. Olympic team.

Cai Xuetong of China won the women’s final.

Golf: Marc Leishman holed out for eagle for the second straight day as he and fellow Australian Jason Day posted an 8-under 64 in the modified alternate shot format to build a three-shot lead in the QBE Shootout in Naples, Fla.

Defending champions Harris English and Matt Kuchar were still in the mix for a fourth title at the Greg Norman charity event. They shot 66 and were tied for second with the teams of Jason Kokrak and Kevin Na, and Billy Horschel and Sam Burns. Lexi Thompson, the only LPGA Tour player in the field, teamed with Bubba Watson for a 66 to sit five shots back.

Motor sports: A first Formula One championship for Max Verstappen was in reach after the Dutchman beat Lewis Hamilton for the pole for Sunday’s title-deciding Abu Dhabi GP.

Hamilton will attempt to win a record eighth championship to break a tie with Michael Schumacher. Hamilton and Verstappen are tied in points, the first time since 1974 that contenders were even going into the deciding race.
