Joseph Gervase McGinn “Gerry”

-

Gerry McGinn was the 4th of 9 children born to Patrick James McGinn and Margaret née Mallon. The family were dairy farmers and owned a grocery shop in Bessbrook, Co. Armagh, Northern Ireland. Gervase, as he was known back home, attended St. Coleman’s College where he excelled at academics and enjoyed Gaelic football. Seeking to become a banker but limited to opportunities due to his religion, Gerry answered an ad in the local paper to work in Canada. In 1955, he set sail for E. Ontario followed by a week-long train ride across the country to British Columbia. After a few years in the small, quiet town of Penticton, he briefly returned home before embarking for California.

In San Francisco, Gerry got a job at Wells Fargo Bank and made close friends in the Irish community. He met his wife, Teresa O’Sullivan, of Castletownbere, Co. Cork at the KRB dances. They were married for 57 years.

Gerry and Teresa had their three children in Sacramento before moving to Fresno and then Yuba City where they built a community over 38 years. Gerry was active in the Rotary Club and a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church. He worked at Wells Fargo for 25 years and ended his career at Umpqua Bank in Yuba City.

In retirement, Gerry was an avid reader of current affairs and history accumulating a wealth of knowledge which along with his trademark kindness, was the foundation of his friendships. An avid walker, he held a deep respect and care for nature. He also loved to travel, accompanying his daughters to Europe and returning home to Northern Ireland.

Throughout his life, Gerry was a doting father, brother and grandfather, and devoted to Ireland and to his Catholic faith. In 2019, Gerry and Teresa returned to San Francisco to be close to their daughters, enjoying the community at Alma Via.

Gerry is preceded in death by his parents, sister (Nan) and five brothers (Patsy, Eamon, Freddie, Colum, Basil). He is survived by two sisters (Stephanie and Leonie), his wife (Teresa), son (Patrick), daughters (Maura and Stephanie), son-in-law (Holger), grandchildren (Pauline, Niall, Konstantin), many nieces and nephews and life long friends.
