Georgia celebrates national title before over 90,000

-

Georgia coach Kirby Smart told a nearcapacity crowd of more than 90,000 at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga., on Saturday the Bulldogs don’t plan to wait another 41 years for their next national championship. Georgia finished 14-1 and No. 1 in the final AP Top 25 following its 33-18 win over Alabama in the national championship game on Monday night in Indianapolis.

“It’s moments and events like this that allow us to look back and allow us to look forward,” Smart said. “… We’re burning the boats, baby, and we’re coming back! Go Dogs!”

The celebration, attended by SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, followed a parade to the stadium.

Golf: Second-round leader Russell Henley kept up the momentum, carding a 3-underpar 67 in Honolulu to keep the Sony Open lead. His 18-under 192 was two better than hard-charging Hideki Matsuyama, whose 63 was the lowest round of the day.

In third place at 14-under were Matt Kuchar (67), Haotong Li (68), Adam Svensson (65) and Seamus Power (65).

Soccer: Kevin De Bruyne’s strike in the 70th minute gave Manchester City a 1-0 win over nearest rival Chelsea to jump to a 13-point lead in the English Premier League.

Liverpool, which hosts Brentford on Sunday, is in third place, 14 points behind City.

Also, Philippe Coutinho, on loan from Barcelona, marked his debut for Aston Villa with a late equalizer to complete a dramatic comeback in a 2-2 draw against seventh-place Manchester United. Robert Lewandowski bagged a hat trick as Bayern Munich scored for a record 66th consecutive Bundesliga game to beat Cologne 4-0 and restore its six-point lead. The ugly side of Spanish soccer’s most heated city rivalry ruined an enthralling clash between Real Betis and Sevilla after a player was hit in the head by an object thrown from the stands and the game was suspended, with no make-up date announced.

The Copa del Rey match at Betis’ Benito Villamarin Stadium was suspended in the 39th minute with the score 1-1 after a 20-inchlong piece of PVC piping hurled from the stands hit Sevilla player Joan Jordan in the head. Jordan went down, holding his head. He was quickly back on his feet but was helped to walk off the pitch just before the teams were ordered by the referee Ricardo de Burgos to follow. The midfielder was taken to a local hospital for a medical check.

Cause of death: The death Monday of Tampa Bay Rays bullpen catcher Jean Ramirez, 28, near his home in Fort Worth, Texas, has been ruled a suicide.
