Gibbs takes bumpy road to Xfinity win

Ty Gibbs bumped John Hunter Nemechek from the lead in a last-lap battle at Richmond Raceway in Virginia and won for the third time this season in NASCAR’s Xfinity Series.

Gibbs and Nemechek, teammates with Joe Gibbs Racing, got physical over the final several laps, trading the lead and making contact several times until Gibbs nudged Nemechek’s Toyota in turn three of the last lap. He won by 0.116 of a second. Ryan Blaney of Team Penske turned a lap of 119.782 mph at Richmond Raceway to earn his third consecutiv­e pole position in NASCAR’s top series. William Byron will start on the outside of the front row Sunday, with Kyle Busch and Chase Briscoe in the second row. NBA: Joel Embiid had 29 points, 14 rebounds and six assists, and the Philadelph­ia 76ers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 144-114 victory over the visiting Charlotte Hornets . ... Golf: Steven Alker fired a 10under 62 to vault to the secondroun­d lead at the Champions Tour event in Biloxi, Miss. Alker, at 11-under for the tournament, has a one-stroke lead over Bob Estes. Paul Broadhurst and Retief Goosen are tied for third at 8-under.

Baseball: Outfielder Justin Upton was designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels. Upton, 34, is set to make $28 million in 2022, the final season of a five-year, $106 million contract extension he signed with the team before 2018 . ... Atlanta reliever Luke Jackson has ligament damage in his right elbow and there’s no timetable for his return . ... Mets ace Max Scherzer is dealing with a hamstring issue and isn’t sure when he’ll pitch next. Scherzer was scratched from his outing Saturday morning in a simulated game.

NHL: Gustav Forsling scored twice, including at 1:45 of overtime, and the Florida Panthers overcame a four-goal deficit to beat the New Jersey Devils 7-6 in Newark, N.J . ...
