Wm. Carter Coleman

-

Wm. Carter Coleman, known as “Bill” on the East Coast, has “journeyed on.” Born in Orange, New Jersey, to Laura Layman Withers, and William Bray Coleman, he spent most of his time growing up in Winchester, Massachusetts and graduated “proudly” from Williams College. After working in New York for Marsh Mclennan, he followed his sister “westward” to San Francisco, proclaiming “Why would I want to leave?” And he stayed. Carter was the “consummate” salesman working for Marsh Mc, Xerox (12 years), Apple, ADP, IRe-Use, Stasis Building, and lastly with OKR’s and Ben Lamorte.

But the biggest “sales job” of his life was asking Kay to marry him after a “two-date, 4 month” courtship. Their love manifested itself to the world for 53 short years.

They traveled the Eastern and Western US, Canada, Europe and Ireland and most memorably, Virginia’s “Crooked Road” listening to Blue Grass.

Carter knew the importance of “giving back” to his community, so he served as a dedicated Board Member of the SF Guardsmen; raising money and sending kids to camp. He continued in the San Anselmo community for 47 years, heading Town Boards and Commissions, coaching baseball, singing in local musical productions, cooking “fund-raising” oysters, laying bricks for a new park, greeting voters at the polls, cleaning storm drains in fierce rain storms and filling in wherever there was a need. And importantly, he supported Kay in everything she did.

Their family: sons Bray (Carolyn), Casey (Vanessa) and Carter’s daughter Debbie, brought joy to every occasion along with the sounds and love of his five Grandchildren-Perry (Amanda), Beau, Kyla, Padon and Will and his Great Grandson, Jasper.

Carter was blessed with many friends and family on both Coasts (both a Red Sox and a Giants fan!). He was greatly loved and will be forever missed.

As he often sang, “Happy Trails to You, Until We Meet Again.”

“Back Yard Celebration” to be held later.

Donations, in Carter’s name, may be made to the San Francisco Guardsmen Campership Fund, 1016 Lincoln Blvd. Suite 205 SF 94129; or the SF-Marin Food Bank, 900 Pennsylvania Ave, SF 94107.
