Mary “Maybeth” Elizabeth Mullins

-

Mary Elizabeth Mullins passed away on Thursday, May 19,2022 in Daly City. Mary was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s nearly eight years ago robbing her of a clear memory, yet her undaunting physical strength and caregiver spirit never failed. Mary spent her final years at Pacifica Senior Living Mission Villa (“PSL”) in Daly City caring and being well cared for.

Mary, a second-generation San Franciscan, who lost her grandmother in the Great 1906 San Francisco earthquake, was born at St. Mary’s Hospital to John and Mary (Fick) Hunt. After graduating from St. Peter’s Academy in 1954 Mary went on to graduate from St. Mary’s College of Nursing. After graduation, and becoming a Registered Nurse, Mary started her 37-year nursing career with St. Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco, eventually Mills Peninsula Hospital in San Mateo/Burlingame and ending with Kaiser Permanente in Redwood City.

Mary made friends wherever she went and one important friend, Patricia (Patsy) Mullins introduced Mary to her future husband, Bernard (Bernie) Patrick Mullins. The couple married on April 4, 1959 and proceeded to have four children in five years, Tom, Kay, Maureen and John.

Mary did not travel nearly as much as she dreamed, but her voracious reading habits and passion for discussions regarding politics and mystery stories provided her a rich depth that there was never a subject she could not get into a deep discussion. Mary was a woman ahead of her time often challenging the status quo.

Early on, Mary was always the one to lean in when anyone needed help; family, friends and especially those with medical and/ or financial assistance. Her most significant commitment was to her daughter, Maureen, who began having serious health challenges in her early twenties. She dedicated all her free time to take care of Maureen, including challenging many in the medical community over the years to solve Maureen’s medical challenges. Mary had a huge soft spot though for wayward dogs and cats, taking in many over the years including her most beloved Tammy, Sassy and Charlie.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Bernie, daughter Maureen, parents John and Mary, brothers John, Carl and Athol (Bud) and many inlaws, nieces and nephews.

Mary is survived by brother, Robert (Bobby) Hunt, sons Tom and John, daughter Kay (Pitman), soninlaw Tom Carl, daughtersin-law Barbara and Joan, grandsons Sean and Troy Mullins, granddaughters Monika Mullins and Stephanie Pitman, sisters-in-law Sr. Mary Lorraine (Marge) Mullins, Angee (Hunt) and Barbara (Hunt), along with many, many family and friends.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial mass at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church at 1310 Bayswater Ave, Burlingame, CA at 1pm on Friday, June 10, 2022 with burial in St. John’s Cemetery immediately following the mass.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Mary’s name to either Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s Research or Mission Hospice & Home Care of San Mateo, CA.
