Terry, a fourth generation San Franciscan, was born in San Francisco on September 20, 1939 to Viola and Harold Callan. He was married to Gail for 55 years whom he met on a blind date in Sausalito which was arranged by their dear friends. Terry and Gail began a lifelong love affair and were married in 1968 at Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Sausalito. Their son, Ryan Terrence Callan, was born in 1978 in San Francisco.

Terry grew up in San Francisco’s Lakeshore Park neighborhood and continued lifelong friendships from the neighborhood. Terry attended San Francisco public schools graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1957. He graduated from the University of San Francisco with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science in 1961. He had a deep love for the university and remained very active chairing and serving on many boards and committees. In 2013 he received the university’s Alumnus of the Year award. His son, Ryan, followed in the legacy of both his father and his grandfather and also graduated from USF. Terry then attended the University of California Hastings College of Law where he was elected to the Thurston Honor Society and received the Order of the Coif for high academic achievement and graduated in 1964.

Following graduation from Hastings, Terry was hired by Mr. John Sutro and joined the San Francisco firm of Pillsbury Madison and Sutro. He was admitted to the bar in January 1965 and began his 50 year-plus career at Pillsbury. In time he was assigned to their litigation practice group counseling clients on antitrust and competition matters where he spent most of his career. Terry was a nationally recognized antitrust lawyer with extensive regulatory and litigation experience spanning antitrust and competition matters. He was the former head of Pillsbury’s Antitrust & Unfair Competition Practice Team and in 2012 was named the Antitrust Lawyer of the Year by the California State Bar’s Antitrust & Unfair Competition Section. Terry was admitted to both the Supreme Court of the United States and the Supreme Court of the State of California.

In addition to his extensive volunteering for USF,

Terry spent many years volunteering as a coach for the Sausalito Little League while Ryan played and then later helped his Dad coach the Braves team. Terry also volunteered as general counsel to the Presidio Historical Association. The “NEGOTIATOR”, as Terry was fondly known by colleagues, loved his family and friends, the law, and the Dons. Terry bled green and gold and he and Gail proudly wore their green and gold scarves to the basketball games and were affectionately known as the “Scarf People”. Terry also loved the Giants and 49ers, and a well-made Maker’s Mark Manhattan on the rocks. He will always be remembered for his wonderful smile that would light up the room.

Terry is survived by his wife Gail Callan (nee Raine), son Ryan Terrence Callan, brother Harold Joseph Callan

(Dorothy), nephew Adam Callan, and niece Michele Cavellini (Jeff) . He was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth Granger.

The family wishes to thank Terry’s long-time caregivers Edith, Elizabeth, and Nahom, and the Aldersly Community for their compassionate care, kindness, and love.
