Elizabeth “Betsey” McCluskey, 94, of San Anselmo, CA, passed away on Friday, January 20, 2023 at her home.

She was born in New Haven, CT on August 15, 1928, daughter of the late Theodore H. and Marian Banks. She is survived by two daughters, Megan and Katherine (Corrie) and by two grandchildren, Ayah and Will, and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, William A. McCluskey, III. She graduated from Smith College in 1949 with a degree in History.

Betsey was Marin Academy’s first librarian. She established a solid collection of books and library materials – starting from that very first summer before MA opened when “Fun with Milk Cartons” did not make the cut. Those patrons who edged over the line of library decorum found themselves urged to vacate the premises and remove themselves to the hall. She enthusiastically threw herself into school activities, attending games, concerts, and assemblies as well as conducting cooking mini-courses. She dearly loved interacting with the students and was devoted to the school.

Visiting the McCluskey home inevitably turned into a trip to Yumsville – something delectable would appear upon crossing the threshold. Having honed her considerable culinary skills on family and friends over the decades, after retirement Betsey set her sights on conquering the Marin County Fair. She won innumerable firsts and best in shows for her creations in baked goods and preserves. Her cookies were to die for. At Betsey’s request, no services will be held. Donations can be made in her memory to Marin Academy, 1600 Mission Street, San Rafael, CA 94901.
