Chock, Bates defend U.S. ice dancing title

Madison Chock and Evan Bates successful­ly defended their ice dancing title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championsh­ips in San Jose, scoring 137.85 in the free dance for a top-place total score of 229.75.

Caroline Green and Michael Parsons earned the silver medal with a free dance score of 126.06 for their program set to “Rhapsody in Blue,” while Christina Carreira and San Jose native Anthony Ponomarenk­o, who were fourth after the short program, scored 121.08 and moved up a spot to take the bronze. Emilea Zingas and Vadym Kolesnik continued a strong debut season as partners, finishing fourth with a 119.95.

• Isabeau Levito needed a near-flawless free skate to capture gold at the U.S. Figure Skating Championsh­ips after Bradie Tennell’s beautiful performanc­e minutes earlier Friday night.

Levito, 15, accomplish­ed just that by delivering a dazzling 149.55 score for a 223.33 total to win her first women’s national title.

The New Jersey skater drew a rousing standing ovation from an audience wowed by her poise under pressure on the big nationals stage. Afterward, she clasped the medal in her gloved right hand and made the rounds of congratula­tory hellos, hugs and photos.

“I actually can’t even find the word to describe it right now,” Levito said.

Two-time U.S. champion Tennell scored a 139.36 in the free skate and finished second with a 213.12 total.

Amber Glenn finished third at 207.44.

College basketball: Grant Sherfield scored 30 points, and host Oklahoma beat No. 2 Alabama 93-69, ending the Crimson Tide’s nine-game winning streak . ... Jarace Walker had 25 points and seven rebounds, and No. 3 Houston rallied from an 11point second-half deficit to defeat visiting Cincinnati 75-69 . ... Armaan Franklin and Jayden Gardner scored 18 points each and No. 7 Virginia used a big first-half run to take control in a 76-57 win over visiting Boston College . ... Kobe Brown scored 20 points, and D’Moi Hodge scored 17 points to help host Missouri top No. 12 Iowa State 78-61 . ... Arthur Kamula scored 20 points, Creighton’s four other starters finished in double figures and the host Bluejays toppled No. 13 Xavier 84-67 . ... Erik Stevenson scored 31 points and host West Virginia withstood a late rally from No. 15 Auburn to win 80-77 . ... David Joplin hit eight 3-pointers and scored 28 points for No. 16 Marquette in an 89-69 win over host DePaul.

• In women’s play, Caitlin Clark had 33 points and 12 rebounds to lead No. 10 Iowa past visiting Nebraska 80-76.

Skiing: American skier Mikaela Shiffrin dominated a slalom in Spindleruv Mlyn, Czech Republic, for her 85th career victory to move within one of the World Cup record set by Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden in the 1980s. Shiffrin overcame a mistake early in her second run as she posted the fastest times in both legs to beat Germany’s Lena Dürr by 0.60 of a second.

Golf: Richard Bland, Thomas Pieters and amateur Michael Thorbjorns­en all reached 10-under overall for a share of the lead after two rounds of the European tour’s weather-impacted Dubai Desert Classic, which will conclude Monday.
