Warren Thomas “Tom” Ireland, resident of San Carlos, Calif., was born on March 9, 1937, in Greeley, Colo., where he spent his early years on his grandparent’s ranch. During World War II, the family moved to Wyoming. He graduated from Sheridan High School, earning a scholarship to Stanford University. While there, he joined the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, and his fraternity brothers remained his lifelong loyal friends. At Stanford, he trained with the legendary boxing coach, Ray Lunny, and earned a very successful record on the school’s boxing team. He graduated from Stanford in 1959 and then entered the Naval Academy, where he was later stationed at Coronado Island, San Diego. As a communications officer in the Pacific, he witnessed and reported the subsurface nuclear detonation of an ASROC missile to the Pentagon. Unfortunately, this event was the likely cause of his Multiple

Myeloma 50 years later. In 1961, he married Sandra Sue Gulliksen, and they had two children, Tracey and Michael. The family lived in Marin and later in Redwood City, where he worked in commercial and industrial real estate development during the birth of Silicon Valley. He enjoyed many family outings, such as trekking in the Trinity Alps, taking horse-packing trips in Wyoming, and teaching his kids to ski. He imparted his love of the outdoors to his children. Tom found joy in white-water rafting, skiing, backpacking, hiking, camping, and mountain biking with his son. Tom also enjoyed being a San Francisco 49’er faithful for over 3 1/2 decades as a season ticket holder. He was also a devoted San Francisco Giants fan. Tom and Sandy were to eventually divorce, but over time, they grew to be friends. He married Victoria Severson, in 1992, and they remained married until his passing. Together, they enjoyed biking, traveling to

Mexico, Europe, and Hawaii, and many years of Sunday outdoor enjoyment at The Alpine Beer Garden in Portola Valley with his many dear friends. He enjoyed spending holidays and birthdays with Victoria, Tracey, and Mike, and also enjoyed attending granddaughters Emery and Olivia’s sporting events. Tom’s vitality and lifelong physical strength gave him much assistance when he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2009 at the age of 72. Victoria was by his side for any and all of his needs. Victoria, Tracey, and Mike were all able to be with him when he passed away on January 22, 2024, at the age of 86. Tom is survived by his wife, Victoria (Severson) Ireland, Tom’s children, Tracey Ireland (Sanjoy Dutta) and Michael Ireland (Narda Garcia), grandchildren Emery Dutta and Olivia Dutta; and brother, Jerry Ireland (Corinda Barbour). A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 25, at 4:30 p.m. at the Stanford Memorial Church. All are invited. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
