To cut Muni fare evaders, make all riders tap
Regarding “Muni fare evasion has nearly doubled since 2019. Here’s the plan to reverse it” (San Francisco, SFChronicle.com, April 12): The addition of Muni inspectors to address fare evasion misses the point.
I ride Muni often and observe many passengers boarding without using the card reader.
Many are not required to use the reader due to Muni’s many different fare programs, but it may seem like rampant fare evasion.
The solution to the problem is simple.
All riders should be required to use the card reader (no additional charges) to eliminate the perception of Muni’s poor management of fare evasion.
This would also make evaders totally obvious and likely discourage people from not paying.

Keep debate civil
Regarding “Disruption at UC Berkeley dean’s home is latest campus flashpoint over Gaza” (Politics, SFChronicle.com, April 10): The conduct of Hamas and the government of Israel is disgusting.
That offers no excuse or justification for law students to enter the house of UC Berkeley School of Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky and his wife, law professor Catherine Fisk, during a private dinner and disrupt the event for personal political purposes.
It is no more proper to characterize Chemerinsky and Fisk as arms of the brutal Israeli government than it would be for me to attack the disruptive students as operatives of the murderous Hamas terrorists.
There is no right to speech in a person’s private residence,
especially when it involves taking over a social dinner for extreme terrorist political assaults.
For goodness sake, try to be good to others and yourselves and stop this uncivilized assault on civility and decency.
