Norma Marie Ahern died peacefully on April 3, 2024 in her apartment at Saint Paul’s Tower in Oakland, California.

She was 99 years old.

Norma was born in Virginia City, Nevada the youngest child of James and Stella Tannahill. As a child, she moved with her mother to Oakland, California. Norma attended St. Augustine grammar school, Holy Names High School and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a BA degree in Internatio­nal Relations in 1947. On May 7, 1949 she married John “Jack” Ahern Jr. They had two daughters Margaret M. Ahern and Sharon E. Ahern.

Norma was active in church events at both St. Leo the Great and Corpus Christi Catholic Church. She volunteere­d with many local organizati­ons, including Providence Hospital, and taught catechism to second graders.

She belonged to the Bellevue Club in Oakland and enjoyed attending musicals and the San Francisco Symphony. Norma relished the friendship­s of her fellow “Niners” playing golf at Sequoyah Country Club. Following his retirement, Norma and Jack traveled extensivel­y, including cruising throughout Europe.

In 2002, Norma and Jack moved to Saint Paul’s Towers and joined a welcoming new community. She particular­ly enjoyed playing bridge at her new home. Norma’s family wishes to express their gratitude to the caring staff of Saint Paul’s Towers and to her caregivers Emma, Ola and Alma.

Norma was preceded in death by her brother James Tannahill and her sister Margaret

(Tannahill) Davies. She is survived by her daughters Margaret Ahern of Santa Rosa and Sharon Ahern of Walnut Creek and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 am on Monday April 22nd at Corpus Christi Church, 322 St. James Dr. Piedmont, C

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to Holy Names High School, Oakland.
