Ingrid Axelsen
12/05/1932 - 04/14/2024
Ingrid Julie Axelsen, a beloved Danish American, peacefully departed this world on April 14, 2024, in Napa, after 91 joyous years. In the spirit of Ingrid’s grace and thoughtfulness, she ensured her family and cherished friends had the opportunity to bid their farewells before her passing.
Born Ingrid Julie Andersen on December 5, 1932, in Copenhagen, Denmark, she experienced the tumultuous years of the German occupation from 1940 to 1945. From the bustling streets of Copenhagen, where she excelled as a model and administrative assistant, to the shores of America, Ingrid’s journey was a splendid one. Crowned Miss Denmark in 1953, she embarked on a lifelong adventure with her beloved husband, Søren Axelsen, whom she married in 1956.
Together, Ingrid and Søren traversed continents, establishing roots in Cleveland, Ohio, where their sons, Peter and Eric, came into the world. Their adventures took them to the golden hills of California, from Tiburon to Salinas, Carmel back to Denmark, a poignant return to Mill Valley, and eventually settling in Napa, where they found solace and community for over 16 years. Even after Søren’s passing in 2016, Ingrid remained a steadfast presence in Napa for an additional eight years.
Radiating warmth and grace, Ingrid was a devoted mother and grandmother, preserving her Danish heritage. Alongside her beloved husband, she shared a passion for sailing, a longtime member of the Corinthian, Stillwater, and Napa Yacht Clubs in Central and Northern California.
Ingrid’s memory will linger fondly in the hearts of all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
She is survived by her two sons, Peter and Eric (wife Sjoukje); and three adored grandchildren, Lilli, Niklas, and Isabella.
