Deadly bombings

Two Asians were killed and a third was injured critically Monday in a series of bomb blasts in Manama city. The victims were foreign workers from India and Bangladesh. “Terrorist attacks against civilians are a result of fatwas issued by religious figures who have not ceased inciting violence,” said Sameera Rajab, a spokesman for the minister of state for information affairs and government. (Editor’s note: Since February 2011, protesters have demanded that the Sunni monarchy grant greater political freedom and end discrimination against the Shiite majority. Some observers say the bombings appeared to open a dangerous new phase in the conflict, which has killed 55 people.)

Iran conference

The conference in Bahrain on Conflict and Competition in the Arabian Gulf ended Monday. Delegates continued their deliberations on Iran’s nuclear program. Several said they believe the U.S. problem with Iran’s nuclear program is not over nuclear weapons but the Iranian government itself.
