Pro Bowl guard Snee retiring from NFL

Guard Chris Snee is retiring from the New York Giants because of a series of injuries.

Snee met with the team Monday, then decided to end his NFL career after 10 seasons. He has had two hip surgeries and now is troubled by right elbow and wrist problems. He sat out minicamp last month but expected to play this season.

The 32-year-old son-in-law of head coach Tom Coughlin was a secondroun­d pick in 2004 and has made four Pro Bowls. He was to be the anchor of a revamped offensive line this season.

Giants running back David Wilson has been cleared for contact work after recovering from neck surgery. Pro-Am basketball: Mac Peterson’s 17 points led a balanced Bay Raiders attack as the team improved to 5-1 in the San Francisco Bay Area Pro-Am with a 106-93 win over South Bay at Kezar Pavilion. Steven Lumpkins had 26 points for South Bay. Boxing: Dereck Chisora withdrew from his European heavyweigh­t title fight against Tyson Fury after breaking his hand sparring.

The Londoner was set to meet Fury in Manchester to contest the European belt and the vacant British title Saturday night, but the fight will be reschedule­d shortly.

Saturday’s fight was also set to be a final eliminator for the WBO world title held by Wladimir Klitschko. Colleges: The Big 12 Conference has assigned a female official to work one of its football games for the first time in history. Commission­er Bob Bowlsby said Monday that Catherine “Cat” Conti will be on the crew for Kansas’ season opener at home Sept. 6 against Southeast Missouri State.

Bob McNamara, an All-America football player for Minnesota in the 1950s and later a fundraiser for the university, has died. He was 82. NHL: The Toronto Maple Leafs and Cody Franson avoided arbitratio­n, with the defenseman signing a $3.3 million, one-year contract.
