Zetterberg’s OT goal gives Detroit 1-0 win

Henrik Zetterberg scored with 9.9 seconds left in overtime to give the host Detroit Red Wings a 1-0 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday for a sweep of the teams’ home-and-home series.

Zetterberg streaked down the right side and sent Niklas Kronwall’s centering pass over Jonathan Bernier’s shoulder.

“I just got pretty good wood on it and it posted in,” Zetterberg said.

Detroit’s Jonas Gustavson made 30 saves for his sixth career shutout. Bernier stopped 31 shots in his third loss of the season.

“Overall the guys did a really good job,” Gustavson said. “They had some shots, but most were from the outside and I could see the puck and they cleared the rebounds.”

Detroit’s Tomas Tatar almost ended the game 80 seconds into overtime, but his shot hit the left post.

Lightning 4, Canucks 2; Steven Stamkos had two goals and an assist as Tampa Bay ended host Vancouver’s three-game, season-opening win streak. ... Goalie Ben Bishop stopped 30 shots in the Lightning’s road opener. ... Ryan Callahan scored the winner, snapping a 2-2 tie at 16:48 of the second period.

Blues 6, Coyotes 1: Jaden Schwartz completed a hat trick with three seconds to play, goalie Jake Allen was strong in his first NHL start in two seasons, and St. Louis dominated host Arizona. ... The Blues’ Jori Lehtera scored his first career goal and had two assists. ... Lauri Korpikoski ruined Allen’s shutout bid with 9:32 left.

Penguins 3, Islanders 1: Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist scored power-play goals 55 seconds apart in the second period to help host Pittsburgh hand New York its first loss. ... Hornqvist, who assisted on Malkin’s goal, added an empty-net tally with 1:20 left to seal the Penguins’ win. Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby had two assists, including the 500th of his career.

Flyers 6, Stars 5: Claude Giroux scored a power-play goal at 2:49 of overtime to lift Philadelph­ia past host Dallas. ... Giroux’s winner came 40 seconds after Dallas’ Trevor Daley was penalized for hooking and was the Flyers’ third power-play goal in the game. ... Daley scored twice, Jason Spezza had a goal and three assists and Tyler Seguin had four assists for Dallas.

Blackhawks 2, Predators 1: Jonathan Toews scored a shorthande­d breakaway goal at 3:26 of overtime to give host Chicago the victory. ... With Patrick Sharp off for tripping, Toews stole the puck from Nashville’s Roman Josi just inside the Chicago blue line. He raced down left wing, cut to the slot and was stopped by Carter Hutton on his first shot, but Toews managed to push the rebound under Hutton’s pads.

Bruins 4, Sabres 0: Niklas Svedberg made 32 saves in his first NHL shutout as Boston won in Buffalo. ... Zdeno Chara, Dougie Hamilton, Torey Krug and Carl Soderberg scored for the Bruins, who won twice on a three-game road trip. ... The Sabres were shut out in consecutiv­e games for the first time since October 2003. Buffalo went 0-for-7 on the power play, falling to 0-for-18 on the season.

Capitals 2, Panthers 1: Host Washington scored on all three shots in the shootout, and Justin Peters made 20 saves in his first start this season in the Capitals’ victory. ... Washington improved to 10-0-1 in its past 11 meetings against its former division rival. ... Brad Boyes’ power-play goal for Florida tied the game early in the third period.

Senators 3, Blue Jackets 2: Mike Hoffman made up for missing a penalty shot by scoring the tiebreakin­g goal midway through the third period for host Ottawa. ... David Legwand and Erik Karlsson also scored and Robin Lehner stopped 38 shots as the Senators won their fourth in a row. ... Columbus goalie Curtis McElhinney allowed two goals on 16 shots before being replaced by Sergei Bobrovsky, who gave up one goal on 18 shots.

Canadiens 3, Avalanche 2: P.K. Subban scored twice and Alex Galchenyuk had a goal and an assist for host Montreal, which improved to 5-1. ... Carey Price made 32 saves for the Canadiens. ... Colorado’s Calvin Pickard made 33 saves in his first NHL start. He was in goal because starter Semyon Varlamov is on injured reserve with a groin injury and backup Reto Berra was hurt Thursday in a loss to Ottawa.
