Ronaldo continues goal-scoring binge

-

Cristiano Ronaldo netted his 14th and 15th goals to set a record scoring start in a Spanish league season as Real Madrid eased to a 5-0 win at Levante, while Lionel Messi scored to move one goal from the league’s all-time scorer.

Messi guided league leader Barcelona to a 3-0 win at home over promoted Eibar, setting up Xavi Hernandez to break through in the second half and scoring after Neymar had doubled the lead.

Messi is now poised to equal Telmo Zarra’s milestone of 251 goals that has stood since 1955 next week at rival Madrid.

Southampton trounced Sunderland 8-0 in one of the biggest wins in English Premier League history.

Also, Sergio Aguero’s fourgoal haul led Manchester City to a 4-1 win over 10-man Tottenham, while Chelsea preserved its five-point lead — and its unbeaten start to the campaign — by beating Crystal Palace 2-1 thanks to goals by Oscar and Cesc Fabregas.

In the last MLS game at Buck Shaw Stadium, the Earthquakes played to a scoreless draw with the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Elsewhere in the MLS, Blas Perez scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season to help FC Dallas beat the host Colorado Rapids 1-0 and move past Real Salt Lake into third place in the Western Conference. ... Felipe helped the Montreal Impact eliminate host Toronto FC from playoff contention, scoring the tying goal in the 39th minute in a 1-1 draw.

U.S. women’s national team star Alex Morgan, formerly of Cal, will be sidelined for four to six weeks because of a left ankle sprain and will miss the remainder of the CONCACAF Women’s Championship, the qualifying tournament for next year’s Women’s World Cup. Morgan reinjured her left ankle in a group-stage victory over Guatemala on Friday night. Boxing: Jamaica’s Nicholas Walters stopped Bay Area fighter Nonito Donaire with a second left in the sixth round in Carson (Los Angeles County), winning the World Boxing Association featherweight title in dramatic fashion.

Walters (25-0, 21 KOs), a fairly unknown fighter, punctuated his breakthrough performance by knocking down Donaire (33-3) for the first two times in the four-division champion’s career. After Donaire swung and missed with a huge left hand late in the sixth, Walters caught him above the ear with an overhand right. Donaire fell face-first to the canvas, and though he beat the count, he couldn’t continue in his second loss in four fights.
