Shiffrin wins gold

American teenager Mikaela Shiffrin defended her slalom title at the world championships Saturday with a strong burst near the end of a choppy course in Beaver Creek, Colo.

Shiffrin, 19, won in a combined time of 1 minute, 38.48 seconds, edging Frida Hansdotter of Sweden by 0.34 seconds. Shiffrin won the slalom world title two years ago in Austria and captured Olympic gold at the 2014 Sochi Games. Motor sports: Matt Kenseth won Saturday night’s exhibition Sprint Unlimited, which was a crash-filled kickoff to the NASCAR season for the second consecutive year.

Only 12 of the 25 cars in the field were running at the end of the race, which was stopped twice by red flags for accidents.
