Nancy Grandin Hutchinson

-

Beloved sister, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday morning, February 5th, 2015. Nancy Hutchinson (neé Nancy Lou Grandin) was born on September 25, 1929 in Pasadena, California to Beatrice Olga Simpson and Henry Bishop Grandin. Nancy attended the Polytechnic School in Pasadena and was awarded the prestigious Laura Wheeler Cup upon graduation from the 9th grade in 1944. Nancy boarded at the Katherine Branson School in Ross California for two years and then came back to Southern California to graduate from Westridge in 1947. She went on to major in French at Stanford University and graduated in 1951.

Nancy was a dedicated sailor throughout her childhood and teenage years. She came in 2nd for the Flight of the Snowbirds in Balboa one year and she also crewed on the Dragoon her father’s 65’ Ketch, in the Transpac race from San Pedro to Waikiki.

Nancy met the love of her life, Karl Joseph Hutchinson, at Stanford and they married in 1952. They moved to Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania in 1958 and by 1960, they had moved to Greenwich, Connecticut where they raised their three children for the next 24 years. Nancy and her husband Karl enjoyed spending time with their children at home in Belle Haven, skiing in Vermont and hunting on their farm in Maryland. They moved to Cary, North Carolina in 1984 and then finally retired in Northern California in 1989.

Nancy loved nature and was a tireless volunteer at The Green Fingers Garden Club and an ardent docent at The Audubon Society of Greenwich. Both Nancy and Karl particularly enjoyed time spent on or near the water and when they made their last move to Pebble Beach, they found the perfect spot with a view of the ocean and The Lone Cypress.

Nancy enjoyed so much of what life has to offer. She was an avid tennis player, enthusiastic gardener, experienced world traveler and dedicated volunteer at The Junior League among others. She enjoyed the symphony and theatre, the company of friends and family, playing with her grandchildren, walks on the beach and days filled with laughter. Her warmth and compassion, delight in life and love of people and nature mark her as an exceptional human being. She was a woman ahead of her time.

Nancy is survived by her sister, Susan Taylor, her three children, Jim Hutchinson, Pete Hutchinson and Bonnie Zellerbach, and her six grandchildren. Along with the love and respect of her family and friends, Nancy will be remembered for her generous spirit, engaging smile, eternal optimism and ferocious organizational skills.

A celebration of life will be held in her memory at The Church in the Forest in Pebble Beach at 2pm on February 21st, 2015. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to: The Monterey Aquarium, The Carmel Foundation or The Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula.
