SAN DIEGO — Kevin Frandsen is with the Giants again, added to the roster Wednesday after Ehire Adrianza was diagnosed with concussion symptoms.

Frandsen is to provide a right-handed bat off the bench and infield depth. Manager Bruce Bochy suggested Frandsen could play first base in Thursday’s series finale when Buster Posey catches Madison Bumgarner.

“We needed some help,” Bochy said. “I’m sure he was a little disappointed he wasn’t one of the original call-ups, but better late than never.”

Frandsen, 33, played for the Giants from 2006 to 2009, just before their championship run, and had stops in Anaheim, Philadelphia and Washington. He played in the Diamondbacks’ system before being released in late May and re-signing with the Giants.

At Triple-A Sacramento, he hit .272 with four homers and 41 RBIs in 86 games. He played 51 games at third, 21 at first, 15 at second and one at short. Concussion outbreak: The Giants have four players shelved with concussions or concussion symptoms: Brandon Belt, Nori Aoki, Gregor Blanco and Adrianza.

“I don’t have words to describe what’s happening with these concussions,” Bochy said. “It really is amazing to have this many.”

Adrianza, playing first base for the first time in his bigleague career, took a hard grounder off his face in the ninth inning Tuesday and stayed in the game but felt dizzy afterward.

“It’s certainly hard to explain,” Bochy said. “We have more knowledge and awareness of concussions. Go back to even when I played, I can’t think of one guy who had a concussion. Personally, I remember getting foul tips and never felt like I had a concussion.”

It was suggested to Bochy that players might have had concussions but simply sat out a few games. “Or played the next day,” he said.

Briefly: Daniel Carbonell of Cuba, who had been designated for assignment, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Sacramento. ... To create room on the 40-man roster for Frandsen, Juan Perez (oblique strain) went on the 60-day disabled list.
