Frandsen glad to be back
SAN DIEGO — Kevin Frandsen had tickets for himself, family and friends for Saturday’s Tim Hudson-Barry Zito extravaganza.
He no longer needs his ticket.
“I’m excited for the fact I have better seats for what should be an insane Coliseum,” said Frandsen, who received a text from his pal Zito after getting promoted by the Giants on Wednesday. “He said, ‘Wouldn’t it be crazy if we faced each other?’
“Both of us are, like, this is hilarious.”
Neither was expected to finish his season in the majors, but both got called up from Triple-A well into September, Zito from Nashville and Frandsen from Sacramento.
Frandsen, 33, played first base Thursday night, his first appearance as a Giant since 2009. He was added to the roster after Ehire Adrianza had concussion symptoms.
Frandsen’s minor-league season ended Sept. 7, and he has been playing golf, watching baseball on TV and hanging at his San Jose home with his wife, Amanda, and their 3-month-old daughter, Tenley.
“I’ve been released twice in the year, so there were no expectations to get called up,” said Frandsen, who was let loose by the Nationals and Diamondbacks. “Being able to come back to the Giants, I’m grateful for this opportunity. Pretty wild. We’ll see what we could do with this.”
Saturday’s Hudson-Zito duel is a bonus, and Frandsen suggested the A’s should sell tickets on Mount Davis.
“That would be awesome,” he said. “They would pack it.”
