Fresno State (1-2, 0-0 MWC) at San Jose State (1-2, 0-1)

Where: Spartan Stadium When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday TV/Radio: CBSSN/1590, 860 Story line: Longtime rivals with questions at quarterback meet in San Jose. For the Bulldogs, it’s not certain who will replace freshman QB Chason Virgil, who’s out for the season with a broken clavicle. For the Spartans, it’s not certain whether Kenny Potter can overcome a sprained ankle to make his third straight start. The Fresno State-San Jose State series began in 1921; the Bulldogs own a 40-35-3 edge.

Injuries: Fresno State — Virgil (shoulder) and wide receiver Aaron Peck (foot) are out. San Jose State — Potter (ankle) and running back Thomas Tucker (ankle) are questionable.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

The Bulldogs’ QB situation is muddled, to say the least. Sophomore Zack Greenlee, who started the first two games, would figure to regain his starting spot, but Greenlee was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication and drinking in public at a party early Sunday. Linebacker Brandon Hughes also was arrested at the party, accused of obstructing officers and resisting arrest. Fresno State head coach Tim DeRuyter has said he won’t announce until Saturday what discipline — if any — Greenlee and Hughes will receive. If Greenlee must sit, look for Ford Childress, a transfer from West Virginia, to start.

If Potter can’t play, San Jose State head coach Ron Caragher probably will go with senior Joe Gray, who started the season opener. Gray, though, struggled (4-for-10 for 20 yards, with an interception) in relief of Potter in last Saturday’s 35-21 loss at Oregon State. Junior Malik Watson replaced Gray in Corvallis; Watson went 8-for-14 for 57 yards, with an interception.

Caragher could take some pressure off whoever is the quarterback by giving the Bulldogs a heavy dose of running back Tyler Ervin. The senior is averaging 6.4 yards per carry and 113.7 rushing yards per game.
